Ian is an award-winning creative director that has worked closely with major, local and international brands. Including and most recently—Tweed Inc, a globally recognized and industry leading cannabis brand. Currently Ian is a co-founder and creative director for Nesta.Co, a private equity firm focused on building brands and companies within the cannabis industry.
Ian worked as a creative lead in Toronto at several world-class design and branding agencies - most notably Bruce Mau Design. While at Bruce Mau, Ian was responsible for the creative and strategic development of several branding initiatives including; SOM Architects, the Ontario Science Centre, Ask.com, and LEGO’s VisionLAB. He was also the lead creative on NBBJ Architects publication series and design manifesto – Change Design.
Ian was also the creative partner in StudioLab where led the rebrand of the University of Toronto as well as the environmental design and branding for Calgary’s new science centre – Telus Spark; The Sugarhouse Casino in Philadelphia, and Rivers Casino in Chicago.
Ian’s work has appeared in Communication Arts, HOW and Applied Arts magazines. His Year of the Horse Lunar Stamp for Canada Post garnered two awards at the Stamp World Cup –The Continental Cup for the most beautiful stamp in America and the World’s Most Beautiful Stamp category.
Alan Gertner is the co-founder and CEO of Tokyo Smoke, a modern lifestyle business that is inclusive of Cannabis.
A lover of technology, design and everything in-between, Alan most recently led a $+100M organization at Google Asia Pacific. Alan is a proven leader in strategy and operations, including as a founding member of Google's first Global Business Strategy team in California. A former Management Consultant at Oliver Wyman in New York and graduate, on the Dean’s list from Richard Ivey School of Business, Canada’s leading business school.
Alan is creating incredibly thoughtful and deliberate interactions with Cannabis—fighting typical stoner stereotypes and providing a thoughtful business approach. In his eyes there is no reason that cannabis can not be treated like fine wine, with an educated user base.
Tokyo Smoke was created to bring design, education, and emotion to Cannabis. Through immersive retail and digital experiences and spanning multiple verticals to inspire creativity and touch hearts.
An angel investor and advisor outside of Tokyo Smoke, Alan supports programs that empower the greater startup community, the Cannabis movement and future generations of people pursuing their passions, including his own Time On Project (www.timeon.org), dedicated to self disruption, mindfulness and winning at life.
Tokyo Smoke was co-founded by the Chairman Lorne Gertner, who is a pioneer in design, licensing, retail, and real estate industries globally. Lorne has substantial experience in fashion whether as president of Mr. Leonard, investing in Pink Tartan with Joe Mimran, or as the Vice Chair of the Fashion Design Council of Canada. In Cannabis, Lorne has proven a visionary, founding Cannasat Pharmaceuticals in 2004, which invested in Canada’s first government license to grow medical marijuana, in addition to co-founding and chairing Pharmacan, a leading Cannabis company in Canada today.
Lorne is a serial entrepreneur with experience in start-ups all the way to going public transactions. Lorne has been referred to as the godfather of the Canadian cannabis industry having been a co-founder and director of Cannasat Pharmaceuticals the first medical marijuana company to be listed on the Toronto stock exchange in 2002.
Lorne is a world-class creative director and visionary and a partner at Quadrangle Architects and adjunct lecturer at University of Toronto teaching a course in architecture, architecture as an entrepreneurial practice.
For the past 15 years Mr. Gertner has been a merchant and investment banker being involved in over $1 billion in transactions in the fashion, retail, cannabis and real estate industry. Lorne was the Chairman and CEO of Hill & Gertner Capital Corporation.
Chuck is a true pioneer of the North American cannabis industry having founded Canopy Growth (formerly Tweed Marijuana) in an dilapidated old Hershey factory and building it into 500,000 square feet of thriving marijuana grow capacity. Today Canopy Growth is worth over $1 billion USD and recognized as a world class cannabis producer. The talent he recruited now guides the entire Canadian cannabis industry.
Chuck brings over 20 years of financial, operational and entrepreneurial experience to his ventures. As a executive in both private and public companies, he has helped secure over $200 million in debt and equity financings. Chuck has completed a dozen M&A transactions, including two TSX public listings.
Chuck is currently the CEO and co-founder of Nesta, a private equity firm that builds partnerships and brands within the cannabis space. He also sits on the boards of Aurora Cannabis (TSX.V: ACB), Supreme Pharmaceuticals (CSE: SL) and CannaRoyalty (CSE: CRZ).
Chuck is a recipient of Ottawa’s Forty Under 40 awards and the 2014 Alumnus Entrepreneur of the Year award from the University of Ottawa’s faculty of engineering. He is a chartered professional accountant, possesses an MBA from Queen’s University and received his B.A.Sc. in Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa.
